아저씨

'아저씨' pronounces 'ajeossi' means uncle or stranger in Korean. But what I'm going to write is about a South Korean action-thriller film named '아저씨', which was starring Won Bin and Kim Sae-ron, and written and directed by Lee Jeong-beom in 2010. The film also known as "The Man From Nowhere". Why I wanna write about this film? Because I just rated it 10 out of 10 on IMDb.

YES! I like it very much. I wouldn't say this is the best movie from South Korea, since I haven't watched a lot movie from S Korea. But this is definitely the best action movie I have ever watched. To be fair I was never an action movie fan and never will be. It doesn't mean I haven't watched any, as a matter of fact I have watched a lot Hollywood action movie. And none of them really touched me. This one did.

The storyline of this movie is not hard to get. Easy enough to be covered in one line.

A quiet pawnshop keeper with a violent past takes on a drug and organ trafficking ring in hope of saving the little girl who is his only friend.

My favourite part of this movie is the chemistry they build between Won Bin and the little girl Kim Sae-ron. I don't have a bar to judge wether an actor's act is good or not, I only think its good when it touches me. The look on Woo Bin's face in a few tense scene sent out the message how deep inside he cares about this little girl who lives nearby, and makes you believe it. It sets apart from those typical action movie role who always trying to play hardcore. Woo Bin doesn't have an action movie-required body shape in my personal opinion. But it kinda was the reason why I watched it at the first place, I didn't know it is an action movie before I decided to kill some time with it in a weekend's night. On the other hand I think this normal body helped him to build more character of this role he's playing.

The acting from this little girl Kim Sae-ron has the most touching scenes. So young and so talented in movie acting. In the movie she lives with her mother who smuggles drugs, also takes drugs herself and eventually killed by the drug trafficking organization. Such a poor kid. It made her kind a lonely person in this world as well just like Woo Bin's role. They only had a few normal life scene together, everyone of those scenes little girls has the just right look on her face no matter a happy scene or sad scene. All the timing was prefect, I am very picky on timing when I watch a movie. I don't have a lot patience, bad timing or wasting time scene often can tells me wether I like this movie or not.

This 'ajeossi' shelled himself with his coldness from outside the world after his pregnant wife and his un-birth child died in a car accident. The little girl is kind in the same situation, with no one related in this world. The connection between this two character is subtle, not friends no blood relationship but at some level even more bonding than family. Thats why when the police caught the little girl for stealing but ajeossi pretended not knowing her, it broke her heart and ours. But because of this case she brought back ajeossi's humanity. She said to him,

"Mister? I embarrass you too, right? That's why you ignored me? It's okay. My teacher and all the kids do that too. Mom said that if I get lost, I should forget our address and phone number. She gets drunk and says we should die. Even though that pig called me a bum... you're meaner. But I don't hate you. Because if I do, I won't have anyone I like. Thinking about it hurts me here. So I won't hate you."

I don't know if its because I have a little sister about her age or maybe her voice is just so sincere and helpless, that line made me teary while I was watching.

I also do not understand why did this next door ajeossi would trying so hard to save this kidnaped little girl, even it takes him putting his own life at risk to against a drug trafficking organization. Maybe because he felt sorry about what he did to her earlier by pretending to be a stranger. Or maybe because of he found some bonding between them like the connection between him and his un-birthed daughter. The only connection between him and this world. Or maybe he just couldn't stand this kind thing happened to a poor little girl. Who knows?! But no matter why, no matter what his heart was telling him to do, it all became his strength when he against drug trafficking organization.

Tae-sik: You live only for tomorrow.

Guy: What?

Tae-sik: The ones that live for tomorrow, get fucked by the ones living for today.

Guy: What are you babbling about?

Tae-sik: I only live for today. I’ll show you just how fucked up that can be.

The highlight of course was the action scene, it was just so "COOL"! The fight sequences blowed me away. Every single movement he did was simple, straight forward, and no wasting time for acting cool to kill. You can read it in his eyes, he wants to kill'em all, he's going to chew them up till nothing left.

'아저씨' final scene

It the end, ajeossi was reunited with little girl. He had one request from her. A hug! He went down on knees and holding her tightly, feels like holding his own child. So beautiful, maybe its her saved him as well from his old cold blood world.

Don't watch the trailer of this movie, its missleading and does not do the film justice. Just go see the movie straightway. And check out the OST of this movie 'Mad Soul Child - Dear', the soundtrack will go through your soul.
